The Taylor Ducks varsity baseball team fell 3-1 to the Gatesville Hornets on Tuesday, March 4. The Ducks' offense struggled, managing just one hit — a single from junior utility player Connor Woods.
After a scoreless first inning, the Hornets took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, capitalizing on an RBI single and a costly error. The Ducks went down in order in the bottom half.
Woods got the start for Taylor, pitching two innings before being relieved by senior utility player Kaddy Maravilla. Maravilla threw two consecutive scoreless innings, and the Ducks cut the deficit to 2-1 when Senior Triston Vega scored on a passed ball heading into the fourth.
Taylor’s pitching staff held Gatesville to just three hits while delivering multiple scoreless innings, but the Ducks’ offense was unable to capitalize. Another costly error in the top of the sixth led to an insurance run for the Hornets, extending their lead to 3-1.
The Ducks went down in order in both the sixth and seventh innings, dropping their record to 1-3-1.
Taylor will look to solve its hitting struggles in tournament play this weekend at Franklin before opening district play against Lampasas in a home-and-home series on Tuesday, March 11, and Thursday, March 13.
