THRALL – The Thrall Tigerettes varsity softball team took a major step toward a district championship Friday, defeating the Lexington Eagles 3-2 in walk-off fashion in the eighth inning.
Piper Hernandez delivered the game-winning RBI single, driving in Selena Quintanilla to secure the victory.
Thrall entered the game coming off a loss to Lexington, with both teams tied at 8-1 in district play. With the win, the Tigerettes now hold a one-game lead heading into their final series of the regular season against Rockdale.
Both pitchers made runs hard to come by.
Miley Pokorny went all eight innings for Thrall, allowing just two runs on six hits while striking out 12. Lexington’s Taylor Atkin threw seven innings, giving up three runs on eight hits with nine strikeouts, as two of the district’s top pitchers dueled.
Thrall struck first in the second inning on a solo home run by Kenzie Engelke to take a 1-0 lead.
Lexington responded in the third, taking a 2-1 lead with an RBI double and a single. Riley Luton tied the game in the fourth with an RBI single, making it 2-2.
The game then settled into a stalemate, with neither team scoring over the next four innings and no runners reaching scoring position during that stretch.
In the bottom of the eighth, Quintanilla doubled to put herself in scoring position, setting up Hernandez’s walk-off single.
Thrall improved to 9-1 in district play. The Tigerettes faced Rockdale on Tuesday and will close out district action on the road against the Tigers at 6 p.m. Friday.
