Vatican elects first American Pope

For the first time in history an American has been named Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. Chicago-born Robert Francis Prevost has spent much of his life living outside of the United States, including 20 years spent in South America.

In Peru, Prevost was a missionary, parish priest, teacher and bishop. As pope, he has taken the name of Pope Leo XIV.

In his first address from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo encouraged everyone to build a bridge of community, to unite all people through dialogues and meetings, seeking peace and justice always.
