A group seeking to promote the vibrant history and community of the town of Jonah is seeking new members.
From noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, Jonah Community Inc. is inviting the community to join them for hamburgers and hot dogs in the 1920sera Jonah Community Center, 40 Co Rd 126, as part of their annual membership drive.
“We are looking for more people to work with us to preserve this historic structure and bring new life to the community,” said Mary Truss, community member. “We are also looking for new faces to join us on the board to help us set the direction of our organization’s future.”
According to officials, the Jonah Community Center, which stands at the northeast corner of Texas 29 and County Road 126, was dedicated in 1922, and was designed by Franz Kuehne, the founder of the University of Texas School of Architecture. For more than 50 years, the historic structure served as a school, but has since been used for community theater, educational programs, meetings, a place of worship, and much more.
Memberships are $25 per household. For questions or to RSVP, contact jonahcommunity@ gmail.com.
