Coupland Civic Organization to go on hiatus

Low participation among locals at a recent Coupland Civic Organization presentation on weather has led officials to place the nonprofit on hiatus — but it’s not disbanding, said President Susan Schmidt.

“Our community is not as cohesive as it once was when the Coupland Community Club was formed. The Coupland Community Club evolved into the Coupland Civic Organization,” she said. “Because of low participation and lack of interest, the Civic Organization is going on hiatus. It is not disbanding altogether in hopes that eventually some younger community members will want to revive it.”

She said the town’s signature train depot and caboose are being donated to the city, which also will sponsor the Coupland Herald and National Night Out.

The CCO will still sponsor Trunk or Treat and Santa at the Depot.

Choo Choo Fest will no longer be held.

“It is with great sadness that the board is doing this, but the board is aging and there is no one to take our places. The general lack of participation has also factored in our decision as well,” she added.

Coupland School news

Coupland School has inducted its newest National Junior Honor Society members — Freddy Macedo, Hunter Bollinger, Sarah Herring, Christian Lopez, Gavin Stinnett and Avery Ward.

Meanwhile, construction on Coupland Middle School is moving along, said Coupland Independent School District Superintendent Earl Parcell.

According to Parcell, the foundation has been poured, steel beams and cross members are on-site and steel “should be going vertical soon.”

Coupland School — which culminates with the eighth grade — on May 8 hosted a giftedand- talented art showcase and graduation was May 22.

Prior to the commencement, Parcell said, “We will celebrate our eighth graders as they will have completed their Coupland Cowboy journey and will look to completing their high school years in a neighboring district.”

From 8 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. June 16-20, the school will hold a 2025 Cowboy Summer Camp for current students in grades one through seven. Activities include fun with food, technology (robots and drones), fishing, recycled art, music and bridge building.

Lunch is provided.
