HUTTO — The Hutto Hippos varsity football team has wrapped up its first couple of weeks of fall practice under first-year head coach Eli Reinhart. The new head man has been working to implement his philosophy on and off the field while getting a first-hand look at his roster.
“It was a great first week of practice, just getting acclimated with everything,” Reinhart said. “I think our kids did a good job adjusting to the challenges that we put in place as a coaching staff. I feel good about where we are at right now.”
Reinhart, who is bringing a fast-paced, high-scoring offensive system to Hutto, said the transition has gone smoothly for his quarterbacks and skill position players. He credited their ability to quickly pick up the scheme and praised their talent level.
“The transition has been fantastic,” Reinhart said. “We have some really talented players. Keilan Chavies is as good as advertised, Jaiden Fields has been unbelievable, and Dylan Owens has been a huge asset.”
The offensive line, a group that Reinhart said will be key to making the offense go, will feature players such as Jayden Mack, Brady Strickland and Adrian Gutierrez.
On the other side of the ball, the Hippos are looking to improve from past defensive struggles.
Reinhart said one of the biggest reasons for optimism is the depth and talent along the defensive line.
“I feel really good about where our defense is at and where it’s headed,” he said. “Our defensive line is really impressive. We can go eight deep with guys that we feel comfortable putting out there at any time.”
He also highlighted the linebacker corps and a secondary he believes could be a strength this season. Fields will see more snaps at defensive back, while Michael Blaylark will serve as the team’s shutdown corner.
Quarterback Hunter Frenette has also impressed the staff with his contributions on defense during the offseason.
The Hippos will have their first opportunity to test themselves against another team when they travel to Weiss High School for a scrimmage Thursday, Aug. 14. Reinhart said facing outside competition is a crucial step in the team’s preparation for the regular season.
“It will be a great opportunity to play against someone else that’s not us,” Reinhart said. “I think it really helps going up against a talented team like Weiss so we can get a good feel for where we are at. I really want to see us go out and execute at a high level.”
The Hippos will open the season on the road versus San Marcos on Friday, Aug. 29.
