HUTTO — A 49-year-old man is dead after he barricaded himself in a home during a welfare check by the Hutto Police Department.

No official cause of death has been released in the case, though a statement issued from the city said the man had been armed at one point.

“No foul play is suspected,” according to the prepared release.

Officers found the body of Shawn Yi when they entered the home after a standoff.

“No police officers or sheriff’s deputies discharged their weapons, and no force was used against the deceased,” according to the prepared release. “No persons were arrested, and no officer injuries were reported.”

According to the release, the case unfolded when officers rushed to a residence in the 100 block of Caponi Fish Lane at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday for a welfare check.

The situation escalated when an armed man barricaded himself inside the residence, investigators said.

“A Hutto Police Department officer engaged the subject via phone, attempting to deescalate the situation over an extended period. As a precautionary measure, residents in close proximity were sent a shelter-in-place text message via the Warn Central Texas system,” the city’s official statement read.

“Despite prolonged negotiation efforts, the situation could not be resolved through dialogue,” according to the prepared statement.

The Police Department’s Special Response Team, with assistance from the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office Special Weapons and Tactics team, “safely gained entry into the residence and located one deceased adult male.”

Officers reported finding “fire and smoke” in the garage, and Hutto Fire Rescue remained on the scene to assist and investigate, police said.
