The Granger Lions varsity boys basketball team defeated the Flatonia Bulldogs 37-25 in a defensive battle to claim the program’s first bi-district championship since 1997 on Tuesday, Feb. 24, at Caldwell High School.
Both teams struggled offensively from the start, with points at a premium throughout the night. Granger held a slim 7-6 lead at the end of the first quarter in what quickly developed into a low-scoring contest.
The Lions created separation in the second quarter, going on a 12-5 run to take a 19-11 lead into halftime. That stretch proved to be the difference, as Granger built a cushion heading into the break.
The third quarter was tightly contested. Flatonia cut into the deficit, but the Lions maintained control and carried a 27-20 advantage into the fourth quarter.
Granger closed the game on a 10-5 run in the final period with its defense limiting the Bulldogs’ scoring opportunities down the stretch to secure the 37-25 victory.
Seniors Kael Jackson, Kye Welles and Caleb Tucker played pivotal roles throughout the night.
Granger faced Big Sandy in the area round on Friday night in Normangee. Results from that game are available at taylorpress. net.
